From the booth

Male AI voice generators, reviewed in words

A late-night host, a calm explainer, a dry announcer: a male voice is a long way from one sound. What sets these voices apart, the controls behind them and the terms that come with using one.

About this site

Articles are on the way.

The feature

A male voice is more than a low pitch

Ask a text-to-speech tool for a male voice and the first thing you get is a list of names. What those names stand for is harder to pin down. Pitch is the easy part to hear, and it tells you little on its own: one low voice can suit a late-night radio slot while another belongs in an airport.

The difference sits in what surrounds the pitch. The breath between phrases, how hard a stressed word lands, the way a sentence ends, and whether a voice holds its character through a long paragraph or flattens out by the third line.

Accent matters as well. A voice built around one regional English can stumble over the place names and borrowed words of another. And a read that flatters a line of advertising copy can grow tiring across a chapter of narration, so the script a voice has to carry is part of the question.

Two voices can share a register and still sound nothing alike.

The schedule

Where a male voice works, and what each job asks of it

  • Long form

    Narration and audiobooks

Hours of one voice. Consistency across chapters and comfortable pacing count for more than a striking first line.

  • Short form

    Ads and promos

Seconds to make a point. Control over emphasis decides whether the read sounds convinced or recited.

  • Explainers

    Training and product video

Clear, even delivery, with pronunciation you can correct for product names and technical terms.

  • Character

    Games and animation

Range is the point here: age, texture and attitude, along with terms that allow the voice in a commercial release.

  • Presenter

    Podcast intros and idents

A few lines heard again and again, so a voice with some personality tends to wear better than a neutral one.

  • Service

    Phone menus and announcements

Understood first, admired second. Clarity over a thin phone line matters, and so does easy re-recording when the wording changes.

At the desk

What you can usually change once a voice is picked

Controls differ from one generator to the next, and they shape the result as much as the voice does.

Pitch
Raising or lowering the register, which tends to sound artificial when pushed too far from where the voice naturally sits.
Pace
Overall speed, and in some tools the speed of a single phrase rather than the whole read.
Emphasis
Stress on a chosen word, set by markup, by a slider, or only by rewriting the sentence.
Pauses
Silence placed where a reader would breathe, by inserting a timed break or simply through punctuation.
Pronunciation
Phonetic spellings or a saved dictionary, for the names and terms a voice gets wrong.
Export
File formats and sample rates, and whether a long script comes back as one file or several.

The small print

Every voice comes with terms

Commercial use

Free and paid plans often differ on whether the audio can be used in client work, adverts or products for sale.

Voice cloning

Copying a real person's voice raises questions of consent, and many services ask you to confirm you have it.

Broadcast

Radio, television and paid advertising can sit under separate terms from a podcast or a website video.

Labelling

Some platforms and clients ask for synthetic speech to be disclosed, so check where the audio will be published.
